The taxi dancer bars of Eastern Styria

What would a slow trip vacation be without a bit of dancing? Didn’t bring a dance partner? No problem, we’ve got you covered. Or, rather, our Styrian taxi dancers do.

Taxi dancer bars are discos with so-called taxi dancers. A taxi dancer is a professional dance partner for all those who need someone with whom to practice dancing. Taxi dancing is rooted in the American 1920s when women worked in “dance halls” and danced with men on a per-dance basis. This service got a new boom in Austria, especially in Vienna due to the breathtaking ball culture prevailing there.

The taxi dancers in Eastern Styria are trained in dances like Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive, Slow Waltz, Quickstep, Samba, Tango and, of course, the Viennese Waltz.

Locals, as well as tourists, really enjoy these taxi dancer bars. Dancing lifts the mood, is healthy and makes people happy.

Longing for localhood in Eastern Styria’s petrol stations

Quaint petrol stations in Eastern Styria are a great place for people watching and have an exceptionally high curiosity factor.

When petrol stations first came about in the late 1800s, they were pretty pared back and focused merely on pumping gas. Over time, in addition to fuel, they sold lubricating oils, tires, spark plugs and accessories. Some even had a workshop attached, but that was it. Services were at the forefront of the experience. Someone would refill your tank for you, clean the windows, check the oil, water and antifreeze levels, and take a look at tire pressure and headlamps.

Nowadays, petrol stations’ don’t make the bulk of their money with fuel or services anymore but with their ever-larger salesrooms. You pump your own gas and often don’t even hand your money to another human but pay with your card at the self-service pump. In times of full motorisation, rationalisation and self-service filling stations, this valuable social profession has been increasingly forgotten.

However, in some places, you can still find original petrol stations with relatively small salesrooms where a gas station attendant will refill your tank for you and give your windows a quick wash. And there’s always time for a quick chat.

In Eastern Styria, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience these old-school petrol stations and their clientele.

We have found a few petrol stations like this for you, so go on a journey of discovery:

  • Gasthaus Falsch mit Tankstelle in Wolfau
