Quaint petrol stations in Eastern Styria are a great place for people watching and have an exceptionally high curiosity factor.

When petrol stations first came about in the late 1800s, they were pretty pared back and focused merely on pumping gas. Over time, in addition to fuel, they sold lubricating oils, tires, spark plugs and accessories. Some even had a workshop attached, but that was it. Services were at the forefront of the experience. Someone would refill your tank for you, clean the windows, check the oil, water and antifreeze levels, and take a look at tire pressure and headlamps.

Nowadays, petrol stations’ don’t make the bulk of their money with fuel or services anymore but with their ever-larger salesrooms.
